Lin Dan’s first round match in the 2017 Malaysia Open took place yesterday at Kuching Malaysia, against the youngster B Sai Praneeth of India. Though he won it, it was a very long and rough match for the two times Olympic Champion.

His long unlucky relationship with the Malaysia Open seems to continue.

Its goes back 2006 when he lost in the final against Lee Chong Wei.  He had a total of 8 match points in that final in still lost it. He was leading 20-13 in the third game and Lee Chong Wei came back to win it 23-21. Thus giving Lee Chong Wei one of the greatest comebacks the sport of badminton has ever seen.

The Malaysian Open is one of the only few tournament Lin Dan has never won in his career.

He had a chance to win it in 2015, but again lost the final to his teammate Chen Long. Last year, he was vividly frustrated and angry after he lost out against Jan Jorgensen of Denmark. It made him to speak out to the media about his disappointment with the service faults called against him during the match.

Yesterday, his match against against the Indian youngster was nothing but bumpy. He looked to be moving slow on the court and lost out 18-21 in the first game. The second game didn’t come easy as the scores stood 17-17. Also during the third game there were two incidents where Lin Dan was clearly disappointed with the line calls given to him. You can see the clips in the video below.

Though unlikely, it is still to be seen if Lin Dan can break the jinx and win the Malaysia Open title for the first time this year.
